Ecosystems of Innovation: Lessons to be Learned and Un-learned [Offline/Online Event]

8 Mar 2023

Innovation is a key driver of economic growth and development, and many countries and regions around the world have been working hard to create the conditions necessary to foster a culture of innovation.

The last decade has seen an extraordinary interest in building an innovation ecosystem on every continent, often inspired by the Silicon Valley model. It is crucial to ask what lessons can be learned from previous efforts to build innovation ecosystems, and what factors are most critical for success. With a highly educated population, a thriving technology sector, and a vibrant startup culture, Ukraine has the potential to be a leader in innovation on the global stage. Join us to explore how Ukraine can capitalize on these strengths and position itself as a major player in the innovation economy.

During the event, you will find out:

  • What positive lessons can be learned from these experiments, and what should be avoided?
  • How might Ukraine position itself as the next great capital of innovation?
  • Unique strengths and opportunities offered by Ukraine as a potential center of innovation.

We will discuss that theme with Barry Katz, Adjunct Professor in the Design Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering, at Stanford University and Professor of Industrial and Interaction Design at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. In addition to his academic affiliations, Barry worked for more than twenty years with IDEO, Inc., the global design and innovation consultancy, where he conducted front-end research in support of IDEO project work. He consults with governments, companies, and academic institutions worldwide on issues pertaining to design and innovation.

Also Barry Katz is an author of the book Make it New: The History of Silicon Valley Design – about the role of design in the formation of the Silicon Valley ecosystem of innovation.
