Discussion dedicated to Mother’s Day. Business is like a child: taking risks and process-based actions

9 May 2021

Why it is important to treat business like your child, how to effectively maneuver between your family and career, and why you should not be afraid to take the child to work. Those and many other issues were addressed during a thematic discussion dedicated to Mother’s Day, which was held by LvBS. The four successful-mother-speakers — Mariia Bei, Solomiia Chubai, Halyna Slavych and Viktoriia Khrystenko — were delighted to share their experience and valuable hacks. The discussion was moderated by Roksoliana Voronovska, mother and LvBS Consulting CEO.

Visitors had a unique opportunity to ask successful women how do they run their business and bring up their children, because the topic of the discussion was: “Motherhood vs. Business: is there a choice to be made”.

In general, the following topics were covered:

• how motherhood influences business;
• typical myths around mothers’ daily life;
• what is common between running the business and being a mother;
• how to build a career and spend time with your children effectively.

We would like to share some insights about combining motherhood and business, which were voiced by the speakers during our heart-warming women’s meeting.

“Motherhood inspires to develop business: combine, grow together and increase the success. Business is like a child: those are two parallel experiences aimed at results. I learned how to delegate, what is of high importance in both business and motherhood,” said Halyna Slavych, co-founder of Pediatric Medical Center “UP”. Her husband and she are bringing up 5 children.

“Motherhood is not about perfectionism, it is about balance. It is important to understand that parenthood is a process and we can find out if our upbringing was a good one only when children grow up. Currently, there is a transition from the patriarchy to the equality model in business. That is why it is so important to show children (especially sons) that upbringing is a shared responsibility,” said Viktoriia Khrystenko, project and program manager of the “The School of Free and Those Who Care” Ltd. and member of Lviv City Council. Mother of three children.

“We should all learn to take the presence of children at work easy. We should not be afraid to take the child with us, if necessary. In fact, it is not as terrible as it seems. There are many photos from various events dated back to the times when I was the head of the Art Association “Dzyga”, in which Oleksa is playing with a plane or a transformer somewhere nearby. Those are his favorite childhood memories. A child constantly needs some visible support from his/her parents. If the child does not feel it, it will be more difficult for him/her to go up the career ladder in the future,” said Solomiia Chubai, musician, singer, producer of literature- and music-related projects, public figure, and philanthropist. Mother of son with autism.

“In most cases, women are the managers of their families. At the same time, it is harder for men to enter the women’s domain than for women to enter the men’s one. Women often do not allow men to do the “housework”, although some of them consciously seek to do this. There are many effective practices (literature, trainings) on how to run a business successfully, but in fact, it is the same as running a family. Each of my business is a child: everything works consistently when you are ready to go and give the whole way. The formula is quite simple: if you invest, you receive,” summarized Mariia Bei, Lviv Business School of Ukrainian Catholic University Key Executive MBA graduate, co-owner of the international logistics company “Bei-Trans”. Her husband and she are bringing up 4 children.
