The Changing Global Power Balance: Challenges for European Firms

Krzysztof Obłój, Roksolyana Voronovska

Abstract

This chapter explores how a large international company in Ukraine responded to the crisis caused by the war in the region, and in particular, how its internationalization helped to shape its responses and adaptation process. The study found that there were several factors and resources supporting Ukrainian companies’ adaptation to the war crisis. Our study focuses on two related resources/capabilities that proved especially useful: internationalization and entrepreneurship drive. First, internationalization enabled managers, directly and indirectly, to overcome initial rigidity and attain some unexpected flexibility at the later stages of adaptation. In effect, it ensured organizational resilience and increased survival chances. Second, entrepreneurial drive enabled managers to see new opportunities, especially in the international market. Instead of focusing on preserving the status quo, they over time focused on developing a global mindset and starting international initiatives. In effect, internationalization worked as a strategic resource enabling company adaptation in the dire straits of war’s crisis.
